McKinley Park

Photos Copyright Theresa HalvorsenMcKinley Park in East Sacramento is one of the older parks in Sacramento. With a softball diamond, tennis courts and a basketball court, it’s popular with east Sacramento families and joggers. It also has lots of open spaces, old trees and plenty of picnic benches.  But is it a good park for preschoolers?

Advantages of McKinley Park for Preschoolers

It has a giant playground (McKinley Village Playground) similar to Miwok Park in Elk Grove.

The McKinley Village Playground has some swings, a giant tire swing, and small slides, perfect for preschoolers. There’s little on the play ground that a preschooler can’t enjoy.

There’s a giant pond to the west side of the park, home to lots of ducks, geese, turtles and fish and is a perfect spot to feed the ducks. Many visitors fish in the pond and preschoolers may enjoy watching them catch fish.

During the summer and fall, the Rose Garden is beautiful and preschoolers may enjoy looking and smelling the roses.

There are lots of paths perfect for strollers and lots of benches for parents to sit and watch their preschoolers.

Disadvantages of McKinley Park for Preschoolers

McKinley Village Playground at McKinley Park only has one big slide. The playground consists of lots of up and down stepping segments, which may be hard for very young preschoolers.

Not only is the pond home to ducks and fish, but it’s also home to many wild geese. Wild geese honk very loudly and when walking are about the same size as preschoolers. They can also be aggressive and may inadvertently frighten your preschooler.

Most of the pond doesn’t have a fence around it, so you may have to be watchful of your preschooler to prevent them from going swimming.

While McKinley Park is very safe during the day, it’s not so safe at night. You should plan your day so you leave the park when it starts to get dark.
